St. Maria Goretti Award

The inaugural Saint Maria Goretti award was presented to JoAnn Axtell at the seventh annual Safe Environment Coordinators and Protecting God’s Children facilitator appreciation day.

Saint Maria Goretti is considered by many as the Patron Saint for Safe Environment and abused children.

Saint Maria was only eleven years old when she was murdered by a neighbor who attempted to sexually assault her. Maria fought to prevent her assault and before she succumbed to her injuries, Maria forgave her attacker.

JoAnn has been involved in the protection of children in our diocese for over twenty years and is a champion for the protection of all children and those vulnerable to abuse.

JoAnn’s spirit, everlasting determination, and continuous efforts reflect the spirit and compassion of Saint Maria Goretti and the Office of Child and Youth Protection. Congratulations JoAnn.
