Bishop James V. Johnston, Jr.

Bishop James V. Johnston, Jr., was born October 16, 1959, in Knoxville, Tennessee, the oldest of the four children of Vann and Patricia (Huber) Johnston. After earning a degree and pursuing a career in Electrical Engineering, Johnston attended St. Meinrad School of Theology in Indiana and obtained his Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Knoxville on June 9, 1990.

Johnston obtained a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Catholic University of America in 1996. He served as Chancellor and Moderator of the Curia for the Diocese of Knoxville, as well as in parish ministry. On March 31, 2008, he was ordained the sixth bishop of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau.

Pope Francis appointed Johnston to lead the Kansas City – St. Joseph diocese on September 15, 2015.

In November 2015, he was elected to serve on the Board of Directors for Catholic Relief Services. He has served on the USCCB Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People, and as the Bishops’ liaison to the National Council of Catholic Women; as of November 2018, he is a member of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities.

Active in RCIA, marriage ministry and Living Waters. Married to Cathy (20 years); they have 9 children; enjoys baseball, farming, playing strategy board games with his kids and making charcuterie.

Married to Essy (23 years) and they have 2 children; enjoys time with family, soccer, basketball, football, drawing, outdoors, live music, and spending time alone with the Lord.

Currently serves on the Boards of the Endowment Trust Fund for Catholic Education and St. Michael the Archangel High School. Enjoys golf, live music, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
