Description: The history of the edifice at 20 W. 9th Street, Kansas City, MO. The first skyscraper in Kansas City, it was originally called the New York Life Building. It was abandoned in 1987 and later renovated to be the home office of UtiliCorp United, using high-tech solutions to combine energy efficiency and retain the original opulence of the building. The building was honored as the 1997 winner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Award. The building’s history is embellished with additional history and descriptions of Kansas City.
