Jubilee 2025 | Pilgrims of Hope kicks off December 28 at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Kansas City
In 2022, Pope Francis announced that 2025 would be a Jubilee Year, saying “We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision. The forthcoming Jubilee can contribute greatly to restoring a climate of hope and trust as a prelude to the renewal and rebirth that we so urgently desire…”
In his Papal Bull proclaiming the 2025 Jubilee Year, Pope Francis further called us to a journey of hope, saying “Pilgrimage is of course a fundamental element of every Jubilee event. Setting out on a journey is traditionally associated with our human quest for meaning in life. A pilgrimage on foot is a great aid for rediscovering the value of silence, effort and simplicity of life. In the coming year, pilgrims of hope will surely travel the ancient and more modern routes in order to experience the Jubilee to the full.”
Jubilee Years have taken place many times throughout both ancient and modern history. They have occurred at various intervals within the Christian era, anywhere from every 25 to 100 years. Pope Francis held an Extraordinary Jubilee in 2015 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council. The previous Jubilee took place in 2000 on the regular 25-year cycle, making 2025 the next Jubilee year.
Many events, pilgrimages, devotions and opportunities for mercy will take place around the world during the Jubilee year. Please visit the USCCB and Vatican Jubilee Year websites for more information.
The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph will participate in the Opening of the Holy Door for the 2025 Jubilee Year on Saturday, Dec. 28. See below for more details and stay tuned for more information on other ways to experience the Jubilee Year in our diocese.
