SUMMARY:April 26: Annual Day of Prayer
DESCRIPTION:In his homily at the Service of Lament in 2016\, Bishop James V. Johnston\, Jr. made five commitments to support the healing of child abuse victims and to advance education and prevention efforts in making safer environments for our children. One of those commitments was to establish an Annual Day of Prayer beginning on April 26\, 2017\, during Child Abuse Prevention Month. \nThe Day of Prayer is an opportunity for all in the Diocese to share in praying for the victims of childhood sexual abuse\, particularly those who have been abused by someone in the Catholic Church\, and for their families\, friends and our entire community. It also is to pray for ongoing efforts in the healing and reconciliation of those who have suffered this abuse\, and prevention efforts in making safer environments for our children and educating adults to support awareness. \nAs part of the Day\, the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph invites the faithful to pray at these public events: \nEucharistic Adoration: in the Chapel of Our Lady of Ephesus at the Catholic Center (20 W. 9th Street\, Kansas City\, Mo.) during work hours \nDay of Prayer Mass with Bishop Johnston: 12:15 p.m. Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (416 W. 12th Street\, Kansas City\, Mo.); parking is limited\, so arrive early to find a spot. A map of downtown parking is available on the Visit KC website. \nOther possible ways to honor the day on your own include: \n\nsaying a prayer\,\nlighting a candle in honor of a survivor\,\nattending Eucharistic Adoration or Mass at your local church\,\nsaying a Rosary\, and\ndiscerning ways you can help survivors and prevent abuse.\n\nDiocesan school children will also be honoring this day of prayer through various activities\, including all-school Mass\, dedicated prayer time\, Adoration and the Rosary. \n\n\nResources/Links: \nOffice of Child and Youth Protection Site \nOur 5 Commitments for Healing and Prevention of Abuse \nBishop Johnston’s 2016 Homily for the Service of Lament \nBishop Johnston’s 2017 Homily for the 1st annual Day of Prayer for Healing

SUMMARY:A Prayer from The Heart: Benedictine College
DESCRIPTION:Benedictine College Going Big to Celebrate Mary \nHundreds of well-wishers at Benedictine College will bury Miraculous Medals along the main campus thoroughfares and in the center of campus this September 8. Participants will fan out across campus\, encircling the heart of the campus and lining the main campus drives and perimeter streets to say the Rosary and place the medals. \nBilled as “A Prayer from the Heart\,” it is all part of an event in celebration of Mary’s birthday and in thanksgiving on the fifth anniversary of Benedictine College’s consecration to the Blessed Mother. \nThe Sept. 8 schedule is as follows: \n\n4:00 – Mass at St. Benedict’s Abbey Church\n5:15 – Rosary around campus\n5:45 – The Consecration Prayer and placement of Miraculous Medals\n6:00 – Picnic in the Park – celebrate with a picnic dinner\, live band\, and birthday cake in Raven Memorial Park\n\nThe college has invited students\, alumni\, faculty\, staff and friends to be a part of history through this special event. Anyone can register to participate at www.benedictine.edu/prayerfromtheheart. Free event T-shirts are available while supplies last. \nBenedictine College President Stephen D. Minnis said the celebration comes after years of relying on Mary. \n“We called on the Blessed Virgin Mary\, and she has interceded on our behalf\, and success has come to the college. It becomes clear we hold a special place in our heart for her\,” Minnis said. “We always say Benedictine College is chosen by Mary to be in this place at this time.” \n“There’s no question we owe a great deal of thanks to the Blessed Virgin Mary\,” said Minnis\, who began planning the consecration not long after he participated in the Vatican’s 2012 “Ecclesia in America” international conference in Rome that was dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe\, the Star of the New Evangelization. \n“I thought\, ‘What a perfect time in our history to consecrate the college to the Blessed Virgin Mary.’ It was so significant and important to make a public statement of our love and reliance upon our Mother\,” Minnis said. \nFive years later\, the 2018 event will be a new “public statement” of appreciation for Mary as the school anticipates a record freshman class. \n“In many ways\, Benedictine College owes its very existence to Mary\, the Mother of God\,” said Minnis. He cited several incidents in the college’s past: \n\nThe founder of St. Benedict’s Abbey\, Benedictine Fr. Henry Lemke\, prayed to Our Lady as he collapsed in exhaustion\, lost in a storm in the Kansas wilderness. At the moment he did so\, a little girl in a pioneer cabin was awakened by “a lady dressed in white.” Her mother lit a lantern in the window to calm the girl. In what he calls “a miracle of the mother of God\,” Fr. Lemke saw the light and was saved.\nBenedictine College was founded two years later in 1858\, the year that “Lady Dressed in White” visited another small town little girl: Bernadette of Lourdes\, France.\nOn the 150th anniversary of the college and of the Lourdes apparition\, the college built a large Mary’s Grotto in the center of campus. The 58 tons of stone used to build the grotto include original stones from Lourdes\, France. Lourdes water was used to mix the concrete.\nThe first sisters in Atchison heard their first Mass on the feast of the Patronage of Mary and took vows “in honor of Almighty God” and “the most Blessed Virgin Mary.”\nThe college has relied on the Marian prayers of the campus Memorare Army prayer campaign to further the college’s mission\, answering important college needs.\nThe college has expanded the prayer campaign to a National Memorare Army praying for religious liberty\, through which the college has gathered pledges for more than 3 million Memorares for the cause.\n\nAt the Sept. 8 event\, participants will bury Miraculous Medals following a tradition of the monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey who have put a St. Benedict’s Medal in the foundation of every campus building. \nThe Miraculous Medal depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary following the design given to St. Catherine Laboure in a vision and is honored at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington\, D.C. \nPresident Minnis leads a weekly rosary at the college on Wednesday mornings throughout the school year and the college added a daily rosary at the Grotto in 2017 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the appearance of Our Lady of Fatima. \n“Mary always leads to her Son\, and we want nothing more for our students than to thrive in their faith in Jesus Christ\,” said President Minnis. \nFounded in 1858\, Benedictine College is a Catholic\, Benedictine\, residential\, liberal arts college located on the bluffs above the Missouri River in Atchison\, Kansas.  The school is proud to have been named one of America’s Best Colleges by U.S. News & World Report as well as one of the top Catholic colleges in the nation by First Things magazine and the Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College.  It prides itself on outstanding academics\, extraordinary faith life\, strong athletic programs\, and an exceptional sense of community and belonging.  It has a mission to educate men and women within a community of faith and scholarship.

SUMMARY:24 Hours for the Lord
DESCRIPTION:In response to the 24 Hours for the Lord initiative promoted by Pope Francis\, the Office of Divine Worship is co-sponsoring 24 hours of adoration and confessions from 5:30 pm March 9 to 5:30 pm March 10 with Our Lady of Lourdes Parish\, Raytown. \nThe 24 Hours for the Lord initiative was first launched in 2014 by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization. This year’s theme is taken from Psalm 130:4\, “With you is forgiveness”. \nIn his 2018 Lenten message\, Pope Francis invited the entire Church to “celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation in the context of Eucharistic adoration”. \n“Lent summons us\, and enables us\, to come back to the Lord wholeheartedly and in every aspect of our life\,” the pontiff said. \n“Above all\, I urge the members of the Church to take up the Lenten journey with enthusiasm\, sustained by almsgiving\, fasting and prayer. If\, at times\, the flame of charity seems to die in our own hearts\, know that this is never the case in the heart of God! He constantly gives us a chance to begin loving anew.” \nThe pope also desired that at least one church in each diocese around the world to remain open for twenty-four consecutive hours\, offering an opportunity for both Eucharistic adoration and sacramental confession. \nIf you are interested in covering an adoration hour\, please contact the Our Lady of Lourdes Adoration chapel coordinator Katei at 816-547-0016 or by email. \nPDF: 24 Hours for the Lord Flyer \n\nResources/Recursos \nExaminations of Conscience \nHow to go to Confession/Como Confesarse \nActs of Contrition/Acto de Contrición \n  \nPope Francis’ 2018 Lenten Message \nUSCCB’s resource page on Confession
